Hyderabad, Aug 27 : Maoist sympathiser Varavara Rao Friday demanded a judicial probe into the killing of Maoist leader Azad in the light of his autopsy report which says he was shot from close range. The revolutionary writer said the autopsy report had rubbished the police claim that Azad was killed in an encounter. "The government should immediately order a judicial probe into the incident to bring out the facts and punish the guilty," he said. Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, a top leader and spokesman of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed along with a journalist Hemchandra Pandey in Jogapur forests in Adilabad district July 2. The police claimed that they were killed in a gunfight but the Maoist party and rights groups said that police had caught them in Nagpur, Maharashtra and then shot them dead in cold blood. Varavara Rao pointed out that from day one he had been saying that it was a stage-managed encounter. "The autopsy report has vindicated our stand," he said. According to the report, the bullet which killed Azad left a one centimetre oval-shaped wound with darkening burnt edges. Experts say such darkening edges in the entry wound happens only due to burns caused by a bullet fired from very close quarters, mostly from less than a foot. Varavara Rao reiterated that Azad was caught and killed when he was working to create conducive atmosphere for talks with the Indian government. The Maoists claimed that Azad was carrying Swami Agnivesh's letter written to him suggesting three likely dates in July when the cease-fire could go into effect. The police, however, denied that they found any such letter.

LSP asks govt to celebrate Telangana Liberation Day on Sept 17

Hyderabad, Aug 23 : The Lok Satta Party (LSP) today demanded that the Government must celebrate Telangana Liberation Day officially on September 17 since integration of Telangana with the Indian Union was a continuation of the country's freedom movement.Addressing a media conference, party leaders Katari Srinivasa Rao and Eeda Chennaiah recalled that both Maharashtra and Karnataka celebrate September 17 as the Liberation Day in the districts, which were under Nizam's rule earlier and became part of those states following the states' reorganisation. ''None should ignore that September 17 was the day when the country was actually united,'' they said.''September 17 should be an occasion to introspect to what extent the present day leaders sought to realise the dreams of those who fought for the Nizam state's liberation and union with India. We don't know what happened to the children of Sardar Patel who integrated the princely states with the Indian Union. ''We do not know the inheritors of K M Munshi and Vellodi who served as Governors of the Hyderabad state. The children of Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, the first Chief Minister of Hyderabad, did not live off their father's reputation. Even the children of Mahatma never ran after office. Raj Mohan Gandhi became an MP in his own right and not as a Mahatma Gandhi's scion. In contrast, present day politicians viewed politics as a means to enrich themselves and further the growth of their children and grandchildren and not to serve the public. It is such politicians who are mortgaging the country's freedom and not left wing extremists or terrorists. The Telangana Liberation Day should inspire every one to work for uprooting the politics of loot and plunder and dynastic rule and ushering in people-oriented politics,'' they said. The party leaders announced that LSP President Dr Jayaprakash Narayan would take part in a sit-in at the municipal office in Ongole as part of the party's programme to organise demonstrations at all municipal offices on August 25 demanding elections to urban civic bodies on time. The party's demands include direct election to the positions of municipal chairpersons and Mayors, elected ward governments, and corruption-free rule.

YSR's son defies Congress leadership, resumes his yatra

Hyderabad, Aug 23: Defying the Congress leadership again, parliament member Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Monday launched the third leg of his "Odarpu (consolation) yatra" in his native Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The young MP began his road shows in Pulivendula constituency after paying floral tributes at the grave of his father, the late chief minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy (popularly known as YSR), at their Idupulapaya family estate. YSR, a practising Christian, was laid to rest at his family estate after he was killed in a helicopter crash last year. Jagan held back from making any attacks on Chief Minister K. Rosaiah or party leadership. "You all know what is happening in the state today," was all that he said while addressing the gathering in Pulivendula town. Jagan unveiled statues of YSR, addressed ac few road shows and consoled the families of those who died of shock following the death of his father in the helicopter crash. During the two-day yatra, the Kadapa MP would visit parts of the assembly constituency which is being currently represented by his mother Vijayalakshmi. The mini yatra is seen as a prelude to the main yatra Jagan will be launching in Prakasam district Sep 3. A day before that, he will address a public meeting at the temple town of Tirupati to mark the first death anniversary of his father. The Jagan camp is unfazed by the warning of the party's central leadership to either call off the yatra or face disciplinary action. Party sources said the central leadership could take some action against YSR's son after Sep 2. Jagan loyalist and state Mines Minister B.Srinivas Reddy and six of the eight Congress legislators in Prakasam district have announced that they would participate in the yatra despite the warning by the party leadership. Meanwhile, Minorities Welfare Minister Mohammed Ahmedullah Monday said he too would accompany Jagan during the yatra. Social Welfare Minister P.Subhash Chandrabose and two dozen legislators participated in Jagan's yatra in East Godavari district last month. The Congress leadership sees Jagan's yatra as an attempt to mobilise support from both the party and public to destabilise the Rosaiah government.

Telangana political issue: Apex court

New Delhi, Aug 20 : The Supreme Court Friday declined to interfere with the Telangana imbroglio saying that it was a political issue and was better left to the political bosses.

"Why should this court entertain the PIL at this stage? It is a political question. No decision has been taken so far. Why should we pre-empt it," said Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia. The apex court bench of Chief Justice Kapadia and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan said the court could step in only after the law carving out a separate state of Telangana was put in place and the same was challenged before it. The court said that when such a law was made it would be open to the petitioner to move the court. The court made these observations in the wake of the hearing of a PIL seeking to restrain the Justice Srikrishna Committee from going ahead with its task of examining the request for a separate state of Telangana. The petitioner Bondada Purushottam Yadav told the court that when the state of Telangana would be created it would violate the unity and integrity of Andhra Pradesh. The Srikrishna committee is engaged in seeking the opinions of political parties, organizations, individuals and groups on the demand for a separate state of Telangana. Disposing of the PIL, Chief Justice Kapadia said that the stage for the court to step in had not come. "We don't know what would be the recommendation of the Justice Srikrishna Committee and what would be its paradigms." Senior counsel Harish Salve who appeared for another petitioner Srinivas Reddy wondered on what "principles states are formed". "Should there not be some parameters. Can it be done on politicians' and public demand," he said. Salve said that when the Srikrishna committee was set up there were no proper terms of reference. The senior counsel asked how could the demand for Telangana be justified on "linguistic and administrative basis".

Former Satyam chief Raju gets bail

Hyderabad, Aug 18 : Andhra Pradesh High Court Wednesday granted bail to B. Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the multi-crore Satyam fraud case.Share This Article:Justice Raja Elango, who had reserved the orders Monday after hearing the arguments from Raju's counsel and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), pronounced the same Wednesday. Raju's lawyer Bharat Kumar said the court had granted conditional bail, asking Raju to make himself available to CBI for any investigations. The 56-year-old Raju has been in jail since January last year when he admitted to a Rs.7,800 crore accounting fraud in Satyam Computer Services Limited, which he had founded. Raju has been undergoing treatment for Hepatitis C in the government-run Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here for the last nine months. With Raju getting the bail, all 10 accused in the case are now out of jail. The court asked Raju not to leave the country and to cooperate with the investigations and trial. "The court has directed Mr. Raju to appear before the investigating agency after his discharge from the hospital," Bharat Kumar told reporters. The disgraced former chairman of Satyam has also been asked to deposit two sureties of Rs.20 lakh each. It was immediately not clear on what grounds the court granted Raju bail but during the hearing Monday, the judge had made it clear that the accused would not get bail on health grounds. Long period of incarceration, delay in trial and parity with other accused were the other grounds on which Raju's lawyers had sought the bail. Terming Raju an "economic terrorist", the CBI had opposed the bail saying the accused might destroy evidence, especially with regard to the money he diverted to other countries. Additional Solicitor General H.P. Rawal had blamed Raju for delaying the trial by avoiding the trial court on the pretext of his illness. He had also raised doubts about the report submitted by NIMS doctors about his health condition. The prosecution had also told the court that the trial could be completed in six months but the judge did not agree with him. Raju had shocked the corporate India in January last year admitting to a Rs.7,800 crore accounting fraud in the IT major. The CBI, however, told the court in November last year that the scam is of over Rs.14,000 crore. The Andhra Pradesh High Court July 20 had granted bail to five accused including Raju's brother and former managing director of Satyam, B. Rama Raju and former chief financial officer Vadlamani Srinivas. The courts had earlier granted bail to three accused while Raju's another brother B. Surayanarayana Raju had obtained anticipatory bail last year. All the accused are facing charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery and falsification of accounts.

PM's statement to Media at Leh

(PIB NEWS) Aug,17, Following is the text of the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s statement to the Media at Leh today: “I was shocked to hear about the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage to property caused by the sudden cloudburst on the night of August 5-6, 2010. My heart goes out to all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray to God to give them strength in their hour of bereavement. I also wish the injured persons speedy recovery. I wanted to come earlier. But, I felt that my visit earlier could have hampered the rescue and relief executions. My Cabinet colleagues Dr. Abdullah, Shri G. N. Azad and Prithviraj Chavan, have already visited Leh, supervised the rescue operations and briefed me. I gather that 179 persons including 6 foreign nationals have lost their lives and approximately 400 persons have been injured. Reports indicate that a number of people including foreign nationals are also missing. There has also been extensive damage to the civil hospital, airport, telecom, drinking water supply works, National Highways connecting Leh-Manali, Leh-Kargil and also to private properties. I congratulate the brave personnel of the Army, the Air Force, BRO, ITBP and the NDRF on their courage, tireless efforts and deep concern for their fellow citizens in distress. The State and the Central Government worked hand in hand and ensured that emergency supplies like tents, blankets, turpentine, food and water urgently dispatched and distributed. The doctors and nurses have also done a very good job. I must congratulate the Leh Council, the Deputy Commissioner and his team and the senior officers of the State Government, for their prompt response. All together, it has been a fine example of prompt and coordinated action in the face of nature's fury. The focus should now shift to restoration of public services and rehabilitation. I would like to assure you that no efforts would be spared by the Central Government in this regard. I urge the Chief Minister to quickly send the memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs so that a Central team is sent at the earliest. I had already announced ex-gratia assistance of Rs 1,00,000/- each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000/- per head for seriously injured persons. I have made a public appeal requesting people to donate generously to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to help those affected in Leh. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources is sending 1000 number of solar lanterns for the affected houses in Leh. These lanterns will provide light in the night and can be charged during the day with solar energy. We will fund a special package amounting to a sum of around Rs 125 crore for the Ladkah region from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF). This will cover the restoration of drinking water supply, renovation of the power supply system including DG sets, repairs to the SNM Hospital and replacement of the C.T. Scan machine, in Leh. It will also cover the restoration of the water supply system and the supply of DG set(s) of appropriate capacity to Kargil. In addition, untied grant of Rs 5 crore each will be provided to the Leh & Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Councils under the Special PMNRF package, to meet emergent requirements. Keeping the special locational disadvantages of the Ladakh area, enhanced assistance will also provided for housing. The State Government will set up a Project Monitoring and Implementation Unit under the Chief Secretary to ensure time bound implementation of the relief and rehabilitation projects. My office will render all possible assistance. Additional financial assistance for the restoration of infrastructure and other items, will be provided on the basis of the memorandum of the State Government and the recommendations of the Central team.”

Big B spins charkha at Sabarmati Ashram

Aug,17, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan walked barefoot and spun the charkha (spinning wheel) at Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad where he is shooting for the second phase of advertisements for Gujarat Tourism. The 67-year-old megastar felt that “serenity and peace descended” upon him and his team as they entered the Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi lived and “from where was born the idea of his struggle for the freedom of our country – of sacrifice, non violence and resolve”.A few scenes for the advertisement for Gujarat Tourism required him to walk around the region in a contemplative mood and he duly did so by removing his shoes.“I removed my shoes by the road and walked about barefoot, even though all others do not. It is not required that they do so but I could not somehow make myself to not go barefoot. The sanctity and the purity of the premises just prompted me to do it,” Bachchan posted on his blog.He even spun the charkha.“I sat with the lone figure of an inmate of the trust that runs the ashram as he spun the ‘charkha’ and produced the fibre for khadi. I tried my hand at it. It is a simple yet intricate procedure of weaving the thread and the extreme joy of having been so close to that most identifiable element of the Mahatma, overpowered all other thoughts,” added Big B, who is the brand ambassador for Gujarat.

Court reserves verdict on Raju's bail plea

Hyderabad,Aug 16:Andhra Pradesh High Court Monday reserved its order on the bail petition of B. Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the multi-crore Satyam fraud case.Justice Raja Elango reserved the order after hearing the arguments from Raju's counsel and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Opposing the bail plea, Additional Solicitor General H.P. Rawal argued that if granted bail the accused could destroy evidence, especially with regard to the money diverted and sent abroad. He told the court that long period of incarceration, delay in trial and Raju's ailment could not be the grounds for granting the bail. Terming the bail plea as delaying tactics, the prosecution informed the court that the trial could be completed in six months. Stating that the accused was involved in economic terrorism and claiming that the crime caused a loss of Rs.24,000 crore to investors, Rawal contended that Raju could not claim parity with other accused granted bail by the high court and the Supreme Court. "In this case there is higher degree of seriousness (of charges)," said Rawal and also informed the court that the prosecution would challenge even the bail granted to other accused. Submitting a list of visitors who called on Raju undergoing treatment for Hepatitis C at government-run Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here for nine months, the prosecution disputed the claim that he was seriously ill and hence was unable to appear before the trial court. Stating that as a citizen he was unable to understand the case, the judge wondered why there was no hue and cry from investors if the inflating profits of the company had caused them huge losses. Raju's senior counsel M. Natrajan said the trial might take six years and not six months as claimed by the prosecution. He said sending letters of rogatory to six countries (where the Satyam money was allegedly diverted) seeking judicial assistance alone would take two years. He told the court that Hepatitis C was affecting Raju's breathing, liver and heart. "He may suffer internal bleeding and a heart attack," he said. "But the offence committed by you has spread virus to people," remarked the judge. The former chairman of Satyam Computer Services Limited remains the only accused in judicial custody as courts have granted bail to the other accused in the case. The court on July 20 had granted bail to five accused including Ramalinga Raju's brother and former managing director of Satyam, B. Rama Raju and former chief financial officer Vadlamani Srinivas. The courts had earlier granted bail to three accused while Ramalinga Raju's another brother B. Surayanarayana Raju had obtained anticipatory bail last year. Ramalinga Raju had shocked the corporate India in January last year by admitting Rs.7,800 crore accounting fraud in the IT major. The CBI, however, told the court in November last year that the scam is of over Rs.14,000 crore. All the accused are facing charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery and falsification of accounts.
