BJP slams Congress on Telangana, but will support statehood bill

Hyderabad:feb 3, Slamming the Congress for enacting a "political drama" over the Telangana issue, senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday asserted his party would certainly support the statehood bill in Parliament but with certain riders. BJP would support the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill "without compromising on the basic principles" and only after securing "justice to all" (regions), he said here. Lashing out at Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh for his statement that the Bill, which stipulates creation of Telangana state, would get Parliament's nod if the BJP co-operated, Naidu said "You never consult...you want to insult. What is this political tamasha (drama)?" Addressing the state executive committee meeting of BJP this afternoon, the Rajya Sabha MP said the Congress had no right to question his party over the statehood issue. "The Prime Minister proposes and the (AP) chief minister rejects. The Congress delayed a decision on Telangana for ten years calculating votes and percentages that will accrue to it. Is it a party at all?" While 1,000 youths lost their lives in Telangana for the cause of a separate state, 350 died in Seemandhra for a united state, the former BJP president said. "Is not the Congress responsible for this? Now they are building temples for Sonia Gandhi and hailing her as the mother of Telangana. What is this tamasha going on in the state?" the former Union Minister asked. Referring to Singh's remarks that they permitted the Andhra Pradesh Congress leaders to "defeat" the Telangana Bill in the State Legislature, Naidu said that there could not be a more ridiculous claim than this. Asserting that the BJP, which favours creation of smaller states, would not go back on Telangana, with ten districts and Hyderabad as the capital, Naidu, however, wanted the Centre to address the concerns of both the regions. "Our demand is that justice should be done to all regions. Without compromising on the basic principles, we are ready to support the Bill (in Parliament)," he said. State BJP President G Kishan Reddy and other leaders attended the meeting.(thanks to times of india)

many cases registered in Andhra liquor scam

Hyderabad, April 17 : The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Andhra Pradesh has registered six more cases relating to the fraud committed in auction of liquor shops in six districts. The ACB, which submitted its status report to state high court Monday, Tuesday said it was focusing on the real beneficiaries running the liquor shops in the names of people who hold white ration (below poverty line) cards."ACB is aware of the financially sound people owning white ration cards but that is not the focus of investigation. This irregularity will be taken care of by the district administration," the agency said in a statement here."ACB applied this primary filter only to initiate investigation and reach the core offenders who obtained licences in the name of innocent people with an intention to gain control over liquor trade in the districts," it added. The ACB said it learnt that in some districts, the core offenders asked these innocent people to go on a "pilgrimage" and be not available for ACB investigation. It requested the local elders to counsel them not to be afraid of ACB but to assist in investigation. The investigations revealed that over 60 percent of license holders in Srikakulam, East Godavari, Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool districts possess white ration cards. The high court Monday asked the ACB to rope in income tax department in the investigations to probe how white card holders managed to mobilize the huge money required for the liquor shop licenses. The case has political ramifications as it allegedly involves some top politicians including a few ministers. The liquor traders are allegedly paying huge money to politicians, excise and police officials to cover up their irregularities. The court has also asked the government to reconsider the transfer of ACB additional director Srinivas Reddy, who was heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the scam. The opposition parties alleged that the government transferred the official to shield ministers involved in the scam. ======================================================
